A significant “direct threat” was successfully averted at a Poland-Ukraine border crossing on Wednesday night. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the incident, crediting cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian services. He also issued a stark warning about potential future incidents linked to Russia.

The announcement followed a meeting of Visegrád Group leaders in Bratislava. Tusk did not offer specific details about the nature of the averted danger. Furthermore, the exact border crossing involved remains undisclosed.

These comments came just one day after a Russian drone attack. This strike hit a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries. Therefore, Tusk emphasized the severity of the current security landscape.

Prime Minister Tusk revealed he had received a “fairly precise report” from the CIA. This intelligence concerned possible events over the coming months. He stressed the need for preparedness across Europe.

“We must anticipate various scenarios,” Tusk stated. He added that Poland and all of Europe need to be ready for different possibilities. This applies not only to the Russian-Ukrainian front but also along the EU’s entire eastern flank.

Russia has previously launched provocative attacks on border crossings. The incident in Moldova, for example, serves as a clear precedent. Tusk expects similar actions targeting border crossings with Ukraine in other countries, including Poland.

In August, Tusk had already expressed concerns about escalating Russian aggression. Following a briefing with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, he called for greater air support for Ukraine. Such support is “crucial for our security,” he asserted.

Tusk also indicated that the next six months would be decisive. He did not rule out provocations against NATO members. Meanwhile, the CIA has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding its intelligence report on the Poland-Ukraine border threat and wider region.
